Your Why

There’s usually a moment where you realise something needs to change. Not urgently. Just… honestly.

For me, it wasn’t one big moment. It was slow. Years of trying diets, stopping, starting again, and somehow ending up right back where I began. I did what most of us do. I followed the rules, lost the weight, felt quite pleased with myself… and then, slowly but surely, gained it all back again. It’s a cycle many of us know far too well.
At some point, something shifted. A quiet realisation that maybe the problem wasn’t effort or discipline. Maybe the problem was the idea that life could be managed in short bursts of restriction.
Because the truth is — life isn’t a diet. It’s a lifestyle. And whatever you choose to do has to be something you can live with… not something you’re just trying to get through.
Have you ever noticed how everyone seems to have a “weight loss journey”? It often sounds so clear and purposeful, as if they woke up one morning with everything figured out.
In real life, it’s rarely like that. Most of the time, change is much quieter. A thought that lingers. A feeling you can’t quite ignore anymore. And somewhere along the way, many of us start to realise something quite important: It’s not really about the weight. It’s about the why.
Now, that sounds simple enough… until you actually try to figure out what your “why” is. For a long time, mine sounded very sensible: “I should be healthier.” “I want to feel better.” "I would like to feel more comfortable in my body.” All perfectly reasonable. Also… not particularly helpful when you’re tired, hungry, and your old habits are calling your name.
Because a real “why” has to be a bit deeper than that. It has to mean something to you. Not in a big, overwhelming way — just in a quiet, steady way that brings you back when things wobble a bit. For some people, it’s about health — wanting to move more easily, feel stronger, or worry a little less about the future. For others, it’s about everyday life — having more energy, feeling more comfortable, just moving through the day with a bit more ease. Sometimes it’s about confidence. Not the shiny, Instagram kind. Just the quiet kind… where you feel a little more at home in your own body.
And sometimes, your why is very simple: You just want to feel like yourself again.
One thing I’ve learned is that you can’t borrow someone else’s “why”. What works for them won’t necessarily work for you. Yours has to fit your life, your rhythms, your reality. And it needs to be steady enough to carry you through the days when things don’t go to plan. Because they won’t always. There will be days when routines slip, when motivation disappears, when you think, “Oh well, that’s that.” But it isn’t. It’s just a day. This isn’t a performance. It’s a process. And most of the time, it’s made up of small, ordinary choices that don’t look like much… until, eventually, they do.
Your why doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be honest. Honest enough to bring you back to yourself, again and again.
So, if you’re thinking about changing something — your habits, your health, or just the way you take care of yourself — maybe start here: Why does this matter to me?
If the answer makes you pause, even just a little… you’re probably closer than you think.
And that’s a very good place to begin.
