The Midlife Waist, Muscle Loss… and What No One Told Us

A simple approach to strength, protein, and feeling like yourself again.

There is a moment — and if you are over 50, you will recognise it instantly — when you catch a glimpse of yourself sideways.

The waist that used to be there has softened. I am talking about that stubborn “menopause tummy” that seems to appear out of nowhere. I used to think I could simply eat less and move more, like I did in my 30s, but honestly… my body has betrayed me.

Your arms do not feel as strong, you get up a little slower (sometimes with a small grunt), and you tire more quickly. Even your limbs can feel stiff when you wake up. Somehow, no one really prepared us for this part, and you find yourself wondering, when did that happen? For a long time, I thought it was simply age — something we all have to go through.

After 50, we start losing muscle every single year, and with that comes less strength, less balance, and less energy — along with that creeping midlife waist. Muscle is not just about looking toned; it is what keeps your body functioning, moving, and coping. When we lose it, everything feels that little bit harder.

For decades, we were told to eat less and walk more. And while walking is wonderful — I will never give up my steps — it is no longer enough on its own. What our bodies need now is something different: strength training, and enough protein to support it.

Our hormones have shifted the goalposts. With the drop in oestrogen and the natural loss of muscle as we age (sarcopenia — or as I prefer to call it, where did my triceps go?), our metabolism needs a different kind of care.

Let’s be honest — most of us are not suddenly going to start spending hours in a gym or hiring a personal trainer. But we can use what we already have, like a kitchen counter, and take a few minutes to move our bodies. Small, consistent changes are what actually make a difference.

I wanted something that felt doable, not intimidating or time-consuming — something you could do while the kettle boils. So, I created a simple printable cheat sheet with a 5-minute kitchen strength routine and an easy protein guide — something practical you can actually use every day.

💛 Why this matters more than we think

This is not about trying to look like we did at 30. It is about getting up easily, carrying your shopping bags without thinking twice, feeling steady on your feet, and having the energy to live your life fully. It is about staying independent — and strong.

I still dunk rusks in my coffee… but now I do a few squats while the kettle boils.

🍗 The protein piece (the part most of us miss)

Most women are simply not eating enough protein. I have been learning that instead of starving ourselves — which only leaves us tired and little hangry — we actually need more of the right things. Protein is not just for bodybuilders; for us, it plays a key role in keeping our bodies strong and functioning properly.

Without enough protein, your body cannot maintain muscle, no matter how many squats you do at the counter. Aiming for around 25–30 grams per meal — for example, a piece of chicken the size of a deck of cards or a cup of Greek yoghurt — can make a noticeable difference. It also helps you feel fuller for longer and can reduce those afternoon sugar cravings.

🌿 Start small — really small

You do not need a complete lifestyle overhaul, and you do not need to be perfect. What matters is consistency. A few squats while the toast pops, a little more protein on your plate, and a quiet decision to do things differently now can go a long way.

✨ And just a gentle reminder

It is not about being thin. It is about being strong, steady, and vibrant — at any age.
